Camp Photos from July 6
Scatterball is the game of choice after most meals (they need outdoor rec
time to run off energy to sit and do math the rest of the time). At the
morning break they played ultimate frisbee with a ball.
We do spend time in the classroom doing math, but it is less photogenic.
We've done work going over the skills test from last night, working with buzzers
(first one to buzz in gets the chance to answer), with i-clickers (all get to
respond to multiple choice questions before the answer is revealed), and a team
event. We spent some time in the computer lab, looking at the game of Set (and giving
them some free time to feel connected to the rest of the world). We also
took group pictures this morning to send each camper home with an 8 by 10 photo.
I had some difficulty picking the best picture to use for that. In the
afternoon they went to the pool. A few did not go into the pool, but played card games outside the pool.
Tonight we will have Krispy Kremes for
snacks (they sure are good :-) ).
Our speaker for the evening was Eric Briggs. He talked about baseball statistics (used in scouting)
and how it was a study in risk versus reward. There are many other areas of
study where people with mathematical knowledge are needed to do this type of study with
the data generated in that field.
